Propaganda Posters
Propaganda Posters is an integral part of my thesis—The Papercy Project.
The Propaganda series of handcrafted posters is the culmination of taking feedback regarding the feasibility of interactive features in Year of Astronomy, as well as being a practical application for Origami Type.
Propaganda started as a desire to want to showcase the typeface. However, showcasing a typeface just for the sake of it does not create much resonance. Hence, the usage of quotations from various designers and creative writers to create a series of posters that can not only showcase Origami Type, but also allows viewers to understand the aims of my thesis.
In order to challenge the notion of a traditional poster, a square frame with a depth of 45mm was chosen. The removable glass panel provides interesting compositional options with which to engage the viewer.
The designs of the posters are made such that they are able to stand-alone, as well as come together to form a composition of either 2, 4 or 6 posters. This is because of the intimacy that the square form allows.
Similarly, the posters were created in such a way as to allow as much corresponding interactivity to the quotes themselves as possible. Two of the posters have glass panels attached, but the remaining four do not.
The desire is to allow the viewer to subtly discover the hidden Easter eggs, such as a blind-embossed quote beneath a printed quote, white ink on black paper, transparent varnish on black paper, changing the orientation of the poster to derive another half of the quote, or even moving part of the poster to reveal a hidden quote.
The posters also do not solely utilize Origami Type, instead forming a symbiotic relationship with the other typefaces used. This tests the feasibility of it as a real functioning typeface, on which it has hopefully succeeded.
